[Blog] Take On Me - Midweek and Weekend Betting Tips
Written by SE1blue on Monday, 26th Sep 2011 18:18

Jesus once said, “It is easier to place blame on someone else then accept personal responsibility”. I’m guessing he wasn’t referring to a last minute volley at Portsmouth messing up his football bet and maybe I’m getting the wrong end of the stick, but I’m finding blaming Erik Huseklepp for ruining last Saturday afternoon so much easier than looking closer to home.

With my new friends, Jesus and Mr Blame, on my side, I thought I would take things one step further and write to Pompey striker, Erik Huseklepp, and see if I could find complete exoneration from my gambling failure. Below is a copy of a letter I posted to Portsmouth Football Club earlier today.

Dear Erik

I would like to start by congratulating you on your winning goal against Blackpool on Saturday afternoon. Sadly, I was not at the game as I am an Ipswich Town fan. However, despite this, your 94th minute goal has had a significant impact on my life. I will explain why in a minute.

Firstly, I would like to apologise that my letter is written in English and hope that you can understand it.

You are not the first Norwegian I have written to. When I was 12 years old I started to correspond regularly with a pen pal in Oslo. His name was Olaf, he liked Iron Maiden and jigsaw puzzles.

Olaf was also an Ipswich Town fan and I would send him the match reports cut out of the local paper - coverage of English football in Norway was poor at the time. He would reply by sending me photos of his dog, Skopti, and snaps of the latest 5000-piece puzzle he had completed. Those were the days!

Unfortunately, my friendship with Olaf ended when he invited me to his family home for my 15th birthday. Personally, I blame a bottle of Akevitt and his poor understanding of English as to how I ended up in his sister’s bedroom, but I guess we will never get to the bottom of that one.

When I was 18 years old I dated another Norwegian I met at university. We were together for nearly two years and I would regularly tell her “Jeg elsker deg” (I love you!). We even talked about getting married. It was on Christmas Eve in 1991 that I discovered she had learnt the English for “I am having an affair with your mate Rob”.

I don’t remember much of that festive holiday; except for crying through the ‘Hunting High and Low’ album, my fight with Rob at the taxi rank and Argos refusing to take back the engagement ring because it was more than 28 days from the purchase date. I thought they would be more understanding considering the circumstances.

So, as you can see, I have had a lot of bad luck when it comes to Norwegians.

On Saturday, I was just seconds away from winning £105.63 because I had placed a £10 bet that West Brom would draw with Fulham (which was correct), and in the same bet, I had predicted Portsmouth would draw against Blackpool. And then you scored.

I fully understand that you were just doing the thing that you love (and are employed) to do. However, five minutes before you scored, my girlfriend (she’s Greek, not Norwegian, twice bitten and all that), had asked me what our plans were for that evening. Thinking that I was about to win over one hundred pounds I suggested that I take her out for a meal by the river in London.

Over a candle-lit dinner - she had the mussels, I had the red mullet - we drunk a couple of bottles of white wine. It was a lovely evening, which we ended with a stroll, arms-linked, along Embankment before catching a cab home.

Now, I don’t blame you for scoring, I am honestly, genuinely, pleased for you. It was a beautiful volley. But, once again, I have suffered unhappiness at the hands (or foot in this case), of a Norwegian.

Another bizarre coincidence is that my evening out on Saturday cost me just over one hundred pounds. I wonder what odds I could have got on that?

So, we come to the reason that I am writing to you.

I would never expect you to cover the cost that your goal had on my personal circumstances (£105.63), but I was hoping that you might consider reimbursing me the £10 that I lost on the bet. This would go a long way to showing me that not all Norwegians are out to ruin my life and allow me the opportunity to try and win back the money I lost thanks to your wonderful goal.

I promise I will pick matches that do not feature any Norwegians and that the next letter I write will be to my old pen pal Olaf, with an apology for what he witnessed occurring on his 10,000-piece jigsaw of the Norwegian fjords.

I hope to hear from you soon. Best wishes for the rest of the season.

Yours faithfully

David Cobb

I’d put good money on me never hearing back from Erik but I’m hoping it might be third time lucky for me with a Norwegian.

Genius blog as always, and some first rate trolling from pmason... Absolutely cracks me up that such a well written, creative and entertaining piece of work of which i am sure SE1 is rightly proud gets profoundly damned in 12 words by one of our resident wind-up merchants!

Se1, i salute you and hope you take pmason as a catalyst for contrasting comment commending your efforts- whether or not this is his intention is up for debate of course! :-)

Doubt you'll get your tenner now as he scored a 90th minute own goal last night. What odds would I have got on 1-0 town with Bowyer to score last night?Miffed I didn't slap a tenner down as that's what I would have gone for.

SE1 Blue - love your blog. Letter to Matthew Manset this week and a black mark for the French as heartbreak again on your double.

Think you can let Bowyer off though :-)
